Today, Teamsters Joint Council 42, representing 24 Local Unions throughout southern California, southern Nevada and Hawaii, unanimously voted to call for the remaining two Los Angeles City Council members who engaged in racist speech, to resign immediately.
The motion also called for the revocation of all past previous Teamster political endorsements of Gil Cedillo, Kevin de Leon and Nury Martinez. Teamster political endorsements traditionally automatically carry forward when candidates seek re-election or election to other offices.
The 24 Teamster Unions represent at least 200,000 working members and Teamster retirees, thousands of which work and live in Los Angeles.
The Union leaders were incensed and extremely disturbed at what has emerged over the past weekend.
“We fight like hell every day in the workplace combatting racist behavior and tones,” Joint Council 42 President Randy Cammack said. “To find out about this despicable behavior from people we have supported was an absolute shock to all of us. This will lead us to be even more vigilant in vetting political hopefuls seeking Teamster endorsement.” #LosAngelesCityCouncil #ResignNow #GilCedillo #KevinDeLeon #NuryMartinez
